I run into something similar in a different forum and I found it interesting.

There seems to be a small trend on occupation and the hobby we all followed so I thought to ask out of curiosity what does anyone here on the club does for a living. You don't have to say if you don't like but I'll start anyway and I am also not part of the trend I noticed elsewhere...

I do kitchen and bathroom cabinets for a living. I have my own company and followed that path after my father had started in the business despite the fact that I finished Biochemistry at Concordia.:D

Anyone else....?

Hi
Well I am a Master Certified Motorcycle Tec, I am in the businness since 14 years. Some years ago I used to build Yamaha Supersport racebikes in Germany.I am in Canada since nearly 3 years and I work for MotoInt on the BMW-Motorrad side. But recently I do not enjoy working on bikes anymore espacially not on BMWs.Too many gadgets that cost too much and to much that can go wrong(reminds me a bit of my helis :D ). But they are Asian and very reliable.....!
Anyway I am looking for something new a , new challenge, any next year will be the year to start looking for something new. I was thinking of maybe going back to aviation school.

I am an engineer at CAE, responsible for a few areas related to the visual systems used on our flight simulators. I have been there for 25 years now, always in engineering, although the specific area has changed a few times over the years. It is a good match for anyone with an interest in aviation.

Well where do I stand?. Lets see.
I was an auto mechanic for 20 years then moved to construction and renovations.
I was doing renovations in B.C. for 19 years and after my accident W.C.B. trained me to be a computer specialist.
I graduated from Kamtex as a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) and from CompTIA A+ certification.
I worked as a network engineer with the NT4 system until the Windows 2000 came in and I went out.
Cost too much to retrain in that system.
So I continued the renovation business and now working as a master carpenter in a building supply store.

Also I am a RCHB ( radio controlled helicopter builder) hehehehehe

Cheers

Well I worked as a tech. in sound system and jukeboxes ( after leaving CEGEP in Electronics.), for those old enough to remember the days of Saturday nite fever, I work on those discoteques of that era (1234 De la Montagne, Disco Charley etc..) After that I was in charge of ship/rec. for Litemor until I went back to school and became a tech for computers, the good ones Apple. During that time I went from tech being in charge of the road service departement + software support all in all about 30 people. After that I was project manager until there weren't enough projects. I worked selling fixing used Apple computers in a store (I was a one man show had some fun there) Then I went to Hobbieville and work for 5 years until it wasn't busy enough to keep me. Now I'm working at a vending machine company, Andre Labbee Inc., in the parts dept. it 4.4km from my house not walking distance like Hobbieville but close enough. Very good people to work with and finally I have my weekends off.

I am an electronic technician. I worked in telephony for a good 14 years.
Those last years in telephony I was working on an advanced application platform ( Isoetec : they are long gone, too bad).
As the market saturated in business phone systems I then moved to data computer stuff and worked in a company that was fabricating and installing 9-1-1 system response.
Some of those years I was also a service department supervisor.

Then I moved to be a network manager for 6 years until june 2007.

From june 2007 until now I flew RC planes !! I needed to test my skills for retirement and to know if retirement would be good.
I passed the test, it would be very good.

I now search for a job as a technical department supervisor.
If you see something just let me know.

Cheers,

Luc

Now retired, and doing what I love most. cutting grass, no I mean flying RC. Way back when, after two years of university, I sold bungalos in TMR for 6 months, then took the money and bought a nice pair of skis, boots and all, plus a volks beetle. Headed for Stowe Vt. ski bum for 4 months until I had no skis, and no beetle and no money. My dad paid my ticket back. Then got a job at Dominion Rubber order desk clerk then on to Parker Pen as a sales rep. from there worked 4 years with the 3M company, in the hardware division the first year then the last three years in the dental division which I introdoced to Eastern Canada the composite materials to replace the almalgams. Then from there worked for a Dental equipment company, called Ash Temple and did sales and dental office designs. From there a friend of mine and myself designed and invented a new color coded filing system for dentist. in 1987 we sold the company to an america firms called Safeguard Business Systems. I then did motivational talks to dentist in Australia,, France, Ireland and England and about 25 US states. after 3 years of living in an airplane, I took a few years off, then got a line of dental lasers which I sold for 5 years, and 7 years ago retired after a massive heart failure. Now with a pace maker and defibelater and 864 dollars a month in pills, which only cost me 79 dollars, being over 65 and living in Quebec. Thank for for that medical system, otherwise I would be broke. , I am at my happiest doing what I love best. RC Planes and some nice drives in my 1974 MGB.

My first job was making pizzas for a place called Greco in Fredericton, New Brunswick. While studying at UNB, I worked for the Dept of Supply & Services (databases for tracking inventory of underground oil containers for buildings with the Government of NB), J.D. Irving programming hand held devices, Saint John Shipbuilding writing databases (I forget what exactly).

Moved to Montreal and took a job with Bizware Computer Systems, where I was coding software used by Petro Canada, Chevron and Mom & Pop gas stations, tracked gas inventory, prices. This company started to fall apart at management level - (3) owners squabbling over who knows what... I looked for work elsewhere and became a contractor for Mission Consultants in Toronto who found me work with Bell Sygma where I worked on billing software called Bill2000 for many years. This software was used by Bell's business customers to do reporting on 1-800, Long Distance calls, equipment, etc. During this time, Bell Sygma was acquired by CGI Group, Inc. So I worked as an external contractor for CGI until they hired me in 2001 as a full-time employee, where I work today. We since introduced a web-based software application (3rd party vendor called CallVision, now named Globys) that replaced Bill2000.

All in all, I've worked on many platforms (Unix varieties, Linux, Windows 3.1, Windows XP, Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2003 Server, OS/2, IBM 3270 mainframe).

Computers, first hands-on was a Commodore VIC-20 that a friend of mine was given as a present for Xmas. Was exposed to Commodore PETs in school, had my own "first" computer - Commodore 64, followed by an Amiga 500 and Amiga 3000. I really hated IBM/PC at the time so the first PC based computer I actually owned was an Intel 486 clone.

So many computer geeks....

I am a Mechanical Engineer and have worked for Rolls-Royce aero engines for 33 years. Started designing low emission combustion systems then got bored so moved to marketing, then to sales in most parts of the world followed by general management for a while then got bored of not travelling so hit the road again. Then some bright spark asked me to come to Montreal to sell a few engines to Bombardier.......

I have been working for 25 years at Genfir Inc., a fire protection business that my father started in 1950. I took over in 1998 after he passed away.
We supply and install fire alarms, suppression systems, sprinklers etc.
Our niche is servicing the fire equipment aboard ships in all Quebec Ports.

Well,

I currently do not work :(

Before coming to Canada, I got a bachelor in international business in Mexico. I run my father's construction company during a couple of years (manufacturing), It has been 2 years that I am in Canada and I worked as projects coordinator for a distributor of industrial boilers in Quebec, I quit to study a full time intensive MBA program at the HEC, (which I am almost starting) that is it, 25 years old, not a lot of chance to do stuff yet, I have no clue what I'll do after I finish school  but for sure, keep on flying :)

I must say that this topic is one that I avoided in my many years at WIMAC since I always felt that the beauty of the club was that all of us were equal at the field no matter what our lives were elsewhere. Our membership has always included an incredible spectrum of people, although engineers, techies, and aerospace people are overrepresented.
That being said, I am a dentist, graduated McGill with a BSc in genetics, then a DDS in 1981. I did a residency program at the Montreal Children's Hospital then worked 25 years in private practice in Montreal. Early in my professional life, before my involvement with RC planes, I was a customer of Bob Forest, not knowing I would meet him again years later through WIMAC.
I closed my practice in Montreal one month ago and took a job in the public service and am now working for a part of the Newfoundland Government called Labrador Grenfell Health, formerly the Grenfell Mission, an interesting and honourable organization that provides health care to Northern Newfoundland and Labrador. I am based in Forteau, Labrador, at the southeast corner of Labrador, right next to Blanc Sablon, Quebec.
I have not yet flown RC here, but I intend to in the spring. I hope to visit WIMAC soon.

Brian, is it the Glenfell hospital that is in St. Stephen's at the tip of Newfoundland or one of the tips. Maybe I have the name wrong, but sure sounded like Glenfell, who was a British Dr.who came to Newfoundland. We had visited his home in St. Stephen's which is now a tourist attractions. Beautiful country.

Not to hijack the thread but the Grenfell mission is based in St Anthony at the tip of Newfoundland's northern peninsula. It was founded by an English doctor named Wilfred Grenfell. I went to St Anthony to visit my employer before coming to Labrador. Sorry, Bob, but I am right about this one.

I know you are, it was St. Anthony I was trying to remember. We drove from Porte aux Basque to St. Anthony and back, stayed in different towns. Thanks for correcting me on the names. I guess it has to do with age.

Brian is only 30 years old, and will stay that age for a long time, as long as he is in the hobby, then one day he will be 70 and over just like me. I was 30 years old t'ill about 3 years ago and now I am 71 years old, so who do you think has some loss of memory? Don't forget all those years I have of doping planes, and CA glue, wait, who am I writing to? Oh, Albert, did we go flying last week? So in conclusion, Enjoy life, live it well and it will return you many good years, as time flies by very fast.

oops. Looks like I did inadvertently hijack the thread. While Bob is a bit older than me, 30 is only a distant memory but I appreciate the sentiment.
