View Full Version : Edge Re-Build

Kevin, you mentioned to start a thread on the re-build of my Edge crashed last weekend because of a stripped elevator servo arm. Since the weather is not good for flying I guess it's a good time for repairs, here is an update on the re-build;

As you can see the first pic is what the plane looked like before the crash and what it needs to look like after the repairs.

First repair was the stabilizer, pretty quick and easy wish that would of been it.

Two of the formers were completely destroyed, managed to put some of the pieces together and draw them on the plywood, still need to be fitted properly but looking good for now.

Thanks, I had time to work on it this morning. Made the rudder servo platform. I'm cutting out all the missing pieces and when everything fits properly then I'll glue it together.

What kind of plywood are you using Michel?

What kind of plywood are you using Michel?

Lite ply from ted's, It's a bit thicker then the original but that's all I could find.

Really nice detail, what are you using to cut-out the patterns?

Really nice detail, what are you using to cut-out the patterns?

Whatever pieces I found from the crash, you can see on the pics what I used to draw up the formers they are symmetric so as long as i get enough pieces to draw up one half, now I'm just sanding the formers to fit properly. Should be ready to glue back together soon.

Thanks Albert, I don't want to say this but I kind of enjoy doing this, it brings me back in the old days when I use to build rubber band kits and fly them in the field next to our house.

Looking good Michael!! I am lazy these days, so, if I break something, I draw it out in Autocad, then have it laser cut..or course drawing it out can be time consuming, but the nice part is you can draw half of it, and then "mirror" it to get the other half...:D :D

Was able to glue the wing tube back in place this way I don't need to worry about alignment of the wings, now I just need to re-enforce the broken areas.

You have the 2 middle formers so I wouldn't worry about alignment.

BTW thanks Albert.

Ok, I don't like to rush to start gluing, just want to make sure everything aligns properly. The first former is in and tomorrow I will put the other one. Once they're in I can join them and the fuse will be in one peace again and I can concentrate at forming both sides.

Michel if the spar is intact it should'nt be too bad to fix. To encourage you look at what I had left of my wing.

That is bad, mind is an easier fix, the first rib against the fuselage is intact, all I need is a new leading edge and replace the front part of the ribs.

I'm not a big fan of CA for those type of repairs, to brittle. I'm using Gorilla Glue and 30 min epoxy. I'll use the CA to glue the balsa sheets.

Worked on the fuselage a bit more, finished all the formers. The smaller details take more time, that fuselage doubler was a pain to do and still need to be sanded to make it fit better. It should be ready to re-cover on the weekend.

Again nice work Michel, if we keep having to repair like this we need a laser cutter to share and also we could make our own airplane, it would be easier then with a band saw and a scroll saw;)
