View Full Version : Bigfoot rebuild

Ok took apart the fuse. Here is a comparison of #1(upside down, engine box still there) and #2. Tested the electronic all is fine. Oh BTW the spinner didn't make it after all:(

With the new engine box kit from 3DHS at ProRC it's not going to be too hard to fix, probably would of done that if it was available at the first crash.

To bad 3dhs doesn't have the same policy as Pilot, they will replace all damaged wood to rebuild for free, just pay shipping.

While I wait for my parts to come in I finally got the enthusiasm to start fixing the wings. So I started with the worst one, which is the left one of the first crash(the right one is ok)

I will fix both. The wing I'm fixing is from the 1st plane, the 2nd set of wings is fine except one of the blind-nut that hold the strut came off, easy fix.

The first fuse was damaged in the bottom only but the second has all the front end beat up. So in getting the motor box kit I will use it mainly for the 2nd fuse but copy what I need for the 1st.:wacky:

I will probably set-up one of them with floats and keep the other for Big wheels and skis.

Let's see those Stearman wings.

Got my stuff today. I thought I had to pay for the neoprene cases(10$ ea) but they were included, even with a soft cloth to clean. I got 2 sets a pink for flying in cloudy day or heli side, and a dark one for the plane side in the sun.

I was happily surprise for the motor box kit, it came with much more parts then it showed in the picture. I put it together dry just to show the good fit.

Kevin Rochon
2014-09-13, 12:57 AM
Tonight I emptied the fuse to get it ready to install the new parts. The thing that doesn't come with the kit of course is the 2 sides because they run the length of the fuse. On this one they are still ok except a little damage but on the other one (2nd crash) it is in very bad shape even, with another motor box kit it's going to take a lot of time to fix. We'll see.

Did some work tonight and from the forecast for tomorrow and Sunday seems I'm going to be able to do a lot on the Bigfoot.

Glued the top cabin and added plywood that was gone from behind the wing tube and side cabin top former.

Got a spare one;)

It doesn't look like much but I did make some part for the bottom of the dash, I also made the tracing for the one for the other Bigfoot, you can see the black dash is what was left. I also fix the side door frame.

On these part I use a bit thicker ply(actually I don't have the same thickness they use) and make a lap joint. It ad's to the strength.

Oh yes that red spot is my blood:eek:

All kinds, Aliphatic wood glue, epoxies 5min. 30 min and flex 30min, also some CA.

Kevin Rochon

Kevin Rochon
2014-10-07, 10:33 PM
Finally taking the time to post the progress. It takes some time because I'm using wood glue. I only had sheeting that is thicker than the original so I will have to sand a bit.

Dwight Macdonald
2014-10-07, 11:44 PM
Looking good! What % is new material?

Kevin Rochon
2014-10-08, 07:57 PM
Well the formers and floor is new and the sheeting. The sides survived enough to be used, only a few repaired cracks. The fuse on the right is the one I'm working on. The formers you see are former formers:D I had to take them out.

The #2 fuse(the one on the left) is more damaged, will have to work harder on those sides.

Kevin Rochon
2014-10-08, 10:14 PM
Some more sheeting done. When dry it's sanding time:rolleyes:

Started the covering today, did the white, not easy with the curves had to mainly use the heat gun. The bit of wrinkle came of with more heat gun plus the stripping will cover most of it, of course won't be like new I would of had to recover the whole thing.

Kevin Rochon
2014-10-19, 12:21 AM
Finished the stripes tonight just have to re-install the windshield than the electronics.

Some people do it, not sure it pays but think of it that way you get to build beautiful projects and you don't need to fund them. You can follow some of his treads on RcCanada (Trevor Brums)

Just got news the news part almost doubled in price, fortunately they agreed to leave the cowl at the previous price because I had reserved it.

Will post some pictures of the progress a bit later.

Kevin Rochon
2014-10-24, 11:01 PM
Ok so I put on the motor, the cowl and the spinner. I had to hit the balsa with a hammer at the bottom edge because it is thicker than the original so the cowl was really tight; should have tried it before covering.

Left to do, install the door, needs a magnet at the bottom lost in crash. Do all the servo ext routing. Install the RX and the battery velcro. So all probably on Sunday.

Kevin Rochon
2014-10-26, 08:21 PM
So I put that magnet and installed the door. Also passed the extension wires and glued the tubes for those and for the antenna of the RX.

Kevin Rochon
2014-10-30, 10:18 PM
Installed the brace and almost a disaster the blind nut on the bottom of the fuse on the RH side(hard to reach) fell off when I was trying to put the screw in:eek: Well I got it back in and glued it with a very long and small long nose pliers and some contortion on my part, so as the other side.

Lesson learned on the 2nd rebuild I will glue them before assembling.

So now it is pretty much ready, maybe just cleaning it. Hope it's nice on the W-E.

(don't read this Albert;))Oh yesterday I programmed the crow function (flaps down ailerons up) I used that in my Ultra-stick before. You do a hammer head then put it on and come down very slowly or do a loop on take off and put it on at the top position and land slowly.

Kevin Rochon
2014-10-31, 09:36 PM
Before taking it apart to clean it decided to test the motor with the prop on. I noticed a wobble I though it was the new spinner maybe not sitting properly but after taking everything off, it is the shaft. It is not much but don't want to damage anything. I had tested the motor before to see if it and the ESC still working but didn't notice that, it's obvious with the prop.

So I ordered from Aero-Model a new shaft and bearings(in case).

Minor setback:mad:

Kevin Rochon
2014-11-12, 08:09 PM
Got my new shaft today. I put it in the freezer to downsize it and to make it easier to put in. I have to put it in with a hammer but I got to line up a screw hole, it's not going to be easy.

Kevin Rochon
2014-11-12, 09:44 PM
Well it's done, wasn't so bad after all. Beside putting the shaft in the freezer I warmed up the outer shell of the motor with a regular lamp which has a reg. bulb, so heat generating. I was able to push it by hand most of the way then I used a hammer with a piece of soft wood.

I had to fiddle around a bit to line up the screw hole but it's done. Tested the motor and now it's turning perfectly.

Will put it back in the Bigfoot tomorrow, maybe a re-maiden this W-E?

hello Kevin
Just for your information. Check the link below

bought this plane. brought it to Wimac in the box.

8 screws , one battery and 20 minutes later it was flying....like a rocket on 6 cells.

Am I missing something here?

http://www.e-fliterc.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=EFL10250

Kevin Rochon
2014-11-13, 11:31 PM
Not sure what's your point Antoine? These are 2 completely different kind of planes and my thread is about a rebuild after a crash.....you can make one too if you crash yours:D (hope not)

Speaking of rebuild I re-installed the motor tonight and after I installed the prop and the spinner I tried it and there was a wobble? So took of the spinner and notice the safety nut was wobbling and without it it was ok so found another one but I notice the new spinner is not 100% it wobble slightly(probably in the manufacture).

But now my EC5 connector is cracked so the black wire keeps popping off. So I will have o change it and to do that I have to remove the ESC because those connectors have to be banged in the casing and can't do it in the plane:mad:

That is why I can't make it tomorrow night if I want to fly it Saturday.

antoine zabal
2014-11-14, 07:08 AM
Ok now I get it.
I thought you were just building a new plane.
It looks like it was quite a task.
Sorry about the crash.
I have half a dozen of crash projets. I will post them eventually.
