The danger zone / La zone maudite

Aujourd'hui au moins deux avions se sont écrasés en suivant le même scénario -
ce qui semble être une zone où le signal de nos manettes est coupé au dessus de gros arbres à l'est de la piste. Il y a à un mille à gauche une grosse tour de télécommunications du côté du développement domiciliaire. Dans mon cas c'était la deuxième fois - avec la piqûre de guêpe entre les deux - pour la même maquette!


Today at least two planes down, same scenario - what seems to be a signal cut-off zone over one of the big trees eastbound. There is a big telecommunications tower a mile away if you look at the direction of the housing development. In my case it was the second event - after the wasp bite incident - with the same ARF!

Je demeure à 0.5 km de cette tour et je ne suis pas sure s'ils opère sur des fréquences qui peuvent causer de l'interférence sur nos radios. C'est une tour de transmission cellulaire qui normallement opère dans la gamme des micros ondes. Je n'ais jamais eu d'interférence sur mon radio même au parc situé a 100m de la tour. Une question peut-être pour les experts en ondes radio. C'est une observation interressante tout de même.

On a vraiment besoin d'un ingénieur en télécommunications pour nous aider. Dommage j'ai déjà travaillé avec les gars du spectre à Industrie Canada mais c'est il y a plus de 20 ans.

Ce serait aussi intéressant de vérifier les récepteurs des autres membres qui ont eu des problèmes. Je doute que ça ait un rapport. De plus j'avais fait un test range avant de faire décoller l'avion.

Interesting. Maybe who ever owns that tower is trying to increase the signal strength for more power and wider coverage, overloading the front ends of other radios operating in the area and that is what is affecting Luc's radio and others. So far I have not experienced that but it is totally plausible, when a big operator gets a permit and a tower, they want to max out the coverage irrespective of who else might be in the line of frequencies that the tower might affect. So what to do about this? Maybe we can find out who operates that tower, maybe we can get them to turn down the signal (Good Luck!) or maybe another solution. I am not a specialist in these matters, but maybe someone has other solutions.

I think the subject is debatable. I don't have knowledge in telecommunications, but I found a map of cell towers in the area. It seems that the north side of the airfield is more populated and the towers are closer, as from imagine below:

However, I was flying in that Saturday and I remember the wind. It was quite strong and gusty. But, the main problem was the direction of the wind. It was allover the place. Three of my flights started with take-off in one direction then landed from opposite direction, due of the wind change. Always above the vegetation (especially around big trees) the gust is dangerous and it is accompanied by serious down draft, because of lower temperature. If combine this with the wind from the back, visually the approach speed might seem ok, but the aircraft could enter the stall speed, then with other perturbation down you go: stall, no flying anymore, no response to any input.
Another day, I saw my plane disappearing behind the big tree aligned with the runway, I hit the throttle then gently pulled up, lucky my plane re-appeared again above the tree top.
It's just my opinion, definitively it could be a real radio interference problem either.

Just as a reminder, all our spread spectrum radios are in a narrow range usable by some garage door openers and other radio Control devices like radio controls for cranes etc.. very close to cell phones which are also in the 2.4 gigahertz and towers are a lot more powerful transmitters. Maybe wise to go back to the 72Mhz, which are clearly reserved for Airborne model planes only...LOL. and true across North America.

Got that right Krish:D Seems like wherever you go or fly there are cell towers unless you live in a very remote area. You have to ask why spread spectrum radios for RC planes if this is a problem.:confused:
