As this is a forum this points out different points of view. It also becomes a educational tool. Michael Wargo said in an interview that the first time he demonstrated to a supplier that a certain plane could perform dancing in the air, the supplier said "Thats impressive, But never do that again." Now Michael goes around the USA demonstrating the suppliers 3D planes.
In the 1960's there was a plane at Canadaire that was being tested and could fly but could also hover and land like a heli. No runway required.
What I have noticed when attempting to fly 3D is the ability to understand and control power to weight ratio. This useful 3D tool I have noticed with trying to develop the ability to fly 3D comes in handy when landing on the runway. The
thumb and memory kick in to control throttle and elevator due to the exercise developed when practicing 3D. Of course you can also develop this skill doing touch and goes repeatedly. But the 3D part improves the throttle to weight response faster.
There are trainers, pattern planes, STOL, control line, fast delta wing, EDF, war birds, drones, helis, and 3D planes.
Just look at the forest around WIMAC. If all the trees were ash there would be no trees. Then there would be no challenge to finding a lost plane.
Variety is natural.
