» About WIMAC |
The West Island Model Aeronautics Club (WIMAC) is an organization that exists solely to provide its members the means to enjoy the exciting hobby of flying R/C model aircraft and helicopters. As its name indicates, the club is located in the West Island, near the municipal park of Cap St-Jacques and is the last R/C club located on the island of Montreal.
Though out the years, the dedication of WIMAC's instructors have permitted a great number of newcomers to this hobby to earn their wings and thus participate fully in this life long hobby. The WIMAC club differentiates itself from other clubs by the active involvement of its instructors and its Flight Training program to train beginners. Rudy Baur, a long time WIMAC member who has since passed away, initiated a Ground School for new members to the various facets related to this hobby. This combination has contributed to the fact that most of our new members in 2001 have earned their wings - the ability to take off, fly and land in a safe manner to all club members and spectators.
WIMAC's flying field provides all the amenities to its members to make the most of their flying time:
- 350' by 55' runway.
- The first 25' of it width is composed of conveyor belt material over crushed gravel and the next 30' is grass strip that will enable large scale aircraft to slow down rapidly.
- The pit area is covered by the same conveyor belt material as the runway - this permits members to disassemble their aircrafts and not lose any pieces in the grass.
- 14' by 20' Sun shelter for those hot summer days.
- Picnic tables and spectator stands.
- Transmitter impound and frequency control board.
- BBQ.
- Weekly grass cutting by a contractor.
- Large parking area.
- Chemical toilet.
